Sportlink Services hosts a web application in which sport associations can keep their membership administration up-to-date. The Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) uses an Oracle database to maintain its member files, amongst other things, using this service. The personal details, contribution payments, details of the player's pass and team classifications for over one million KNVB members are stored in this database. The details from this file have a high level of mutation. Many (youth) members change team or association regularly or need to update their contact details regularly, for example. Because the system is so large, many people are involved in keeping details up-to-date at the same time. Through hosting a web application, Sportlink ensures that these details can be updated centrally via the internal network, and that no local software packages have to be used. Whereas every KNVB office used to have its own application, the six KNVB district offices and the head office now use the central Sportlink service. The membership administration and competition fixtures are both managed using the central database. Just like the members, the clubs also have lots of different conditions that can influence the fixture list. Each club has to consider a limited stadium capacity; some associations use the same accommodation and each team often has its own preferred time. In order to take this into account as much as possible, all these conditions and preferences are stored in a database. A special application then ensures that a suitable competition program is produced by the computer, which processes all these conditions. The system has a direct connection to KNVB Mail, so that any announcements and changes can be sent directly. Finally Sportlink also manages the database in which all the results from the various KNVB competitions are processed. The results are now still sent on paper and filled in by hand, though it is already technically possible to enter the results directly using a computer or even a mobile phone. Such directness is still currently something for the future, but it will not be long before it is actually in use. Alongside the football association, the hockey association, korfball association, basket association and handball association all use the Sportlink Services system.
